Rev. Fr. John A. Ocilka was born on October 30, 1957 He was educated at Holy Family (Mt. Pleasant) Elementary School in Cleveland, Chanel High School Bedford, South High School Cleveland, Borromeo Seminary Wickliffe and St. Mary Seminary Wickliffe. On May 28, 1994 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Bishop Anthony Pilla ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Fr. Ocilka's first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Leo the Great, Cleveland. On June 13, 2000 he was assigned as Parochial Vicar of St. John Bosco, Parma Hts. During this assignment he served as Spiritual Moderator for Holy Name Societies South West District effective May 18, 2005. On June 30 2007 Fr. Ocilka was appointed Administrator of St. Clement, Lakewood. On October 30, 2009 he was granted a medical leave of absence to attend to his personal health. On October 1, 2012 Fr. Ocilka was granted total and permanent disability retirement. Fr. Ocilka was a joyful priest whose smile was infectious. He dealt with chronic Illness for the last few years and remained optimistic throughout.
He was the beloved son of Gladys L. (nee Barnfield) and Aloysius Ocilka (both deceased). Dear brother of Michael Ocilka (deceased)(Donna), Mary Machaskee (Lex), Paul Ocilka (deceased), Maureen Ocilka (deceased) and Therese Borucki (David). Loving uncle of Michelle Ocilka, Adam Machaskee and Nicholas Machaskee (Aubrey). Loving great uncle of Kadance and Kenny Diemer and Ian and Sawyer Machaskee.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations are suggested to St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. John Bosco Church.
The wake will begin with Vespers on Tuesday July 21, 2020 at 3:00PM at St. John Bosco Church 6480 Pearl Rd Parma Heights,OH 44130 Bishop Martin Amos, Bishop Emeritus of Davenport, Iowa will be the presider and Fr. Lawrence Jurcak, pastor of St. Mary Parish, Hudson OH. Will be the homilist. Public Visitation to follow until 7:00PM (masks and social distancing required).
Private Family and Clergy Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Wednesday July 22, 2020 Bishop Martin Amos presiding and Fr. David Liberatore, pastor emeritus of St. John Bosco Church will be the homilist. followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery.
