Eleanor (“Ellie”, “Mom” and/or “Ma”) Bernard (nee Kleban), devoted and beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to so many, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2023. She led an exemplary life and touched the heart and soul of so many.
Ellie was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 1, 1930 to Michael and Maria Kleban. She was the youngest of her 5 siblings: Ann (Minarek), Mikey, John, George, and Marie (Casalino). Ellie attended John Adams High School where she met the love of her life and her husband of over 61 years, David L. Bernard. Together they built a legacy of love. Ellie was blessed with 4 children David (Ellen), Daniel (Wendy, deceased), Deborah (Roger, deceased) and Dale (Aretta). Ellie treasured her grandchildren, Kimberly, David (Lauren), Ashley (Jason), Dena (Chris), Allison, Neil, Ariana and Anya. Ellie eagerly awaited and celebrated the arrival of her adored great-grandchildren, Isabella, Isaac, Jameson, Lexi and Nora.
Ellie was renowned for her culinary skills and legend has it that she could make soup from just about anything and did. She was the consummate hostess and no one ever left her home hungry. Ellie was a fan of all Cleveland sports, but most especially the Cleveland Indians (Guardians). Ellie loved to travel with family and treasured her vacations to Florida, Hawaii, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Colorado, Toronto, the Thousand Islands, Canada, New York City, upstate New York and Washington DC.
Ellie loved all of her extended family and friends and kept in regular contact with all of them. Ellie mastered her smart phone at the ripe age of 82! She was a master of and prolific user of social media and regularly regaled her family and friends with funny videos and heartfelt messages, emojis included. Ellie taught by example and those teachings live on in those she leaves behind. Ellie was a blessing to all and will be so missed.
